A balanced plate means including all food groups at each meal to offer your body true nourishment. We are often so quick to cut out certain food groups but each food group provides us with different nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fibres so it's important to include them all! This balanced plate model will help you achieve optimal nutrition, control cravings and will satisfy your body’s needs without using numbers to guide you. Life is too short to count calories, but it is important to be aware of how to eat healthily. How to build a balanced plate:
Serve 1/2 a plate of colourful vegetables
Add 1/4 plate of lean protein
Add 1/4 plate of complex/ wholegrain carbohydrates
Lastly add 1 - 2 Tablespoons of healthy fats
REMEMBER: There is not such thing as a "perfect" diet. This balanced plate model should just be used as a guide whenever possible. It doesn’t mean that every meal has to look like this but it's a great place to start to ensure that you are eating balanced meals wherever possible & meeting your nutrient requirements.
