BRAAI TIPS

A braai is more than just a cooking method, it is a social and cultural event that brings people together to enjoy good food, good company, and the great outdoors. With the weekend in sight, here's some tips to help you keep it healthy while still having a good time!

The most important tip is to try to stick to having a balanced plate of food.

Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter of your plate with healthy carbs, the other quarter with lean protein and a small amount (thumb size) of healthy fats.

VEGETABLES:

  • Roast some veg in the oven as a side dish

  • Use foil on the fire to make roast veg

  • Make a big salad with lots of greens, tomato, onion etc.

CARBS:

  • Make sweet potato/ potato in foil on the fire

  • Cook some mielies on the braai

  • Add healthy carbs to your salad or veggies (eg. quinoa, couscous, butternut, etc.)

PROTEIN:

  • Use lean cuts of meat like steak, chicken (without skin), fish etc.

  • Instead of buying meat in a marinade, spice the meat yourself with herbs, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, chili, etc.

HEALTHY FATS:

  • Add avocado or feta to the salad or veggies

  • Use olive oil as a dressing

  • Sprinkle your salad with nuts or seeds

I hope you find these tips helpful and are able to use them at your next braai!
