Reading food labels can be very confusing so I thought I would create this step-by-step guide to help you. I hope you find it useful!
STEP 1: Check the ingredients list
Ingredients are listed in order of what makes up most to the least of the product.
TIP: scan the first 3 ingredients, as these usually make up the largest part of what you are eating.
Avoid/ limit intake of products if sugar, salt, fats or additives are in the first 3 ingredients.
STEP 2: Check the nutrition information table
Provides info about the energy & nutrients in a product.
Information is usually presented per 100g or 100ml, & per recommended serving size.
Always compare nutrients of products per 100g or 100ml as serving size may not be the ideal portion size.
STEP 3: Interpreting the nutrition information
FIBER:
We want to aim to increase the amount of fiber in our diets as we know that it's associated with many health benefits. When looking at the nutrition label, try choosing products with >3g / 100g.
HIGH: > 6g
MEDIUM: 2 -6g
LOW: < 2g
This is so informative and useful, I now know how to read a label and make an informed decision!!! Thanks for this Melis.
